Suicide: Is it the only solution?

What is suicide?

When someone intentionally causes his or her own death then it is referred to as suicide. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in United States, suicide is said to be 10th leading causes of death which takes almost 47,000 lives each year.

Globally, approximately 8, 00,000 people die due to suicide every year which is one person every 40 seconds. Considering the age factor, suicide is seen as a leading cause of death majorly in young people. Talking about the gender, suicides rates in men are approximately twice as high as for women.

Reasons

There can be many reasons behind a suicide or attempted suicide which can even be complex. The period between childhood and adulthood is the gray area which is teen. Surely, it is the time of a lot of possibilities but on the other hand, it can also be a period of stress and worry. There is a pressure on them which can include fitting in the society, performing academically and acting responsibly.

This time is the period of adolescence in the life of any person which is also a time of sexual identity and relationships. In such time, they require independence which is opposite to the rules and expectations set by others.

There are a number of factors which can be reasons further increasing the risk of suicide among them:

  • Any kind of psychological disorder including depression, alcohol and drug use (which is one of the major factors who die by suicide having psychological disorder);
  • Feeling of distress, agitation or irritability;
  • Any attempt of suicide done previously;
  • Feeling of worthlessness, hopelessness;
  • Dealing with an un-supportive family, community or hostile school environment;
  • Emotional, physical or even sexual abuse;
  • Lack of support;
  • Poor relationships with parents;
  • Feeling of social isolation.

Some Warning Signs

The person who is having suicidal behaviour or suicidal thoughts can have a number of warning signs which if observes then he or she should immediately seek some assistance from a psychiatrist or therapist. These signs include:


  • Dramatic mood swings; 
  • Talking, writing or thinking about death;
  • Social withdrawal from friends, family and community;
  • Aggressive behaviour;
  • Impulsive or reckless behaviour;
  • Threats or comments of killing themselves;
  • Increase in drug or alcohol use.

Talk to them

It is important to talk openly and don’t be afraid to ask direct questions which can include, “are your thinking of suicide?” During your conversation with such a person, it is important to make sure that:

  • You should stay calm and should speak to them in a reassuring tone; 
  • You should offer some kind of support and encouragement to them;
  • You should acknowledge that their feelings are legitimate;
  • You should tell them that there is always helping hands which are available to them;
  • You should assure them that there are treatments by which they can feel much better.
